Tom has been a member of the Schoharie County Arts Council in Cobleskill, New York, since early 2000. From 1965 to 1969 he studied practical fine arts under John F. Gould, listed in "Who's Who of American Illustrators: 40's Decade."
Tom has been painting off and on ever since he was the male senior artist in 1956 at Souderton High School, in Pennsylvania. In 1969, due to a move, Tom stopped painting. In 1999 he picked it up again as a retiree now living in Schoharie, NY.
Artist Comments: I like to finish my works quickly, usually taking no more than three or four hours (although larger paintings take up to a full day, sometimes spread over a week or so). I try to use my brush strokes to create movement in my paintings, which is more important to me than faithful reproduction or working the design with specific shapes or colors. My most successful works draw the viewer into the picture and then "trap" him or her in movement that comes back upon itself.
In October of 2000 I won an art Grant from the NYSCA organization (New York State Council on the Arts) under a regrant program administered by Schoharie County Arts Council. Under this grant, I agreed to paint works inspired by landscape scenery found in Schoharie County and surrounding counties. The grant freed me to paint my pictures in what I call my "raucous" style, with little regard to whether I sell the resultant paintings or not. My outdoor show of the resulting paintings was held on September 15th, 2001 in a combined show with my wife at our home on the side of a mountain (Sunnyside Road, also called County 57) overlooking the Schoharie Valley in Schoharie, New York. The show was free and open to the public.
In February, 2003, Tom and Sue held a two-person exhibit of their works at the Schoharie County Arts Council Gallery in Cobleskill, New York. They sold 18 of their paintings from gallery, which is believed to be a record at the gallery.
Surena (Sue), until recently a part time staffer at the Schoharie County Arts Council in Cobleskill, New York, has been a member of the SCAC for nearly eight years. From 1965 to 1969 she studied practical fine arts under John F. Gould, listed in "Who's Who of American Illustrators: 40's Decade."
In 1969, due to a move away from the Gould Gallery and the arrival of two children, Sue stopped painting. Since moving to Schoharie in 1999, she has again picked up her brushes, and is currently studying under the tutelage of Elizabeth Apgar-Smith, a nationally-known prize-winning artist, whose works have been featured in many books.
Artist Comments: I like to take my time finishing a painting and usually spend four or five sessions with drying time between to complete my work. I like to use detail and color to create a realistic scene that someone may recognize or say "Gosh, I think I've been there."
